Honey Ants Mat Black, Brown and White 2.7m DiameterProduct Code: 15683Price $164.89 $149.90
This charming design was created by Dean Jakamara Briscoe, a respected Australian Indigenous artist from the Anmatyerre, Central Desert, region. Dean is a professional artist and designer. In Honey Ants, he celebrates the tradition of digging for foods, including the wild bush honey produced by these curious Australian insects.
The symbols in the design depict people with nulla nullas (digging sticks) going out after the rain to search for ants. They need to dig up to a metre below the surface to retrieve the ants, which hang upside down in subterranean chambers. The digging can be hard work, but the sweet, smooth rewards are worth it!
Celebrate culture and the planet by choosing a contemporary Aboriginal design recycled mat in beautiful shades of black, brown and white and being reversible, you get two colour choices for display in the one mat. X-Ray Kangaroo Mat Burgundy & Black 1.8m x 2.7mProduct Code: 15696Price $120.89 $109.90
Created by artist Dale Austin, the X-Ray Kangaroo recycled plastic mat tells the story that comes from the Clans of the Gagadju (Kakadu). Dale explains: “In the creation time when the Earth Mother Warramurrungundji walked across the land placing clans, planting food and releasing animals onto the lifeless country, the first ancestral animals helped shape the country as they were giant.
One of these ancestral animals was Garndagidj known to Balanda (non-aboriginal) as Antilopine Walleroo, a smaller cousin to the Kangaroo and bigger than the Wallaby.
As Garndagidj travelled the country he left huge depressions and created small outcrops of the escarpment. In his travels he noticed a rock that was like no other in one of his tracks that he left. When he picked it up he noticed that it was different in colour and texture. He dusted his paws off but the colour stayed on.
This was the first Delek (Ochre). He travelled to all the clans showing them and giving it to them, to put to use. This is now known as white ochre, used with the other 3 colours Gunrodjbe (red), Banja (yellow) and Gunyirrge (black) commonly used throughout Gagadju and Arnhemland to paint the stories, totems and body for ceremonies.”
The mat is reversible, soft, durable and very easy to clean.Learn More
Sand Goanna Mat Outback Red 1.8m x 2.7mProduct Code: 15695Price $120.89 $109.90
Created by artist Caitlin Tindall this piece is a careful collision of both tradition and modern contemporary art. Caitlin takes great pride in her work, and spends a lot of time drafting designs, choosing the perfect colours, and putting love into every dot and paint stroke she creates. The artwork that she treasures most have been passed down by her Grandfather, a Kamilaroi Elder who made didgeridoos, painted boomerangs and carved emu eggs.
This mat is made using recycled plastic in warm outback reds, weaved in a reversible manner, allowing you to choose which predominant colour to display. Utilise your Sand Goanna as a feature piece for your interior or take it outdoors. If the mat is exposed to extra dirty environments it is easily cleaned by using a garden hose and letting it dry in the shade.
The sand goanna is one of the totems significant to the artist's mob, the Kamilaroi people. This mat design represents the knowledge and connections between people and places, that are carried through the goanna. The background of the design shows the tracks of the goanna, with the lines representing the trail that his tail leaves in the sand, and the dots on either side are his footprints as he walks. The design also incorporates campsites of men and women who gather together to share yarns, pass down knowledge and practice culture.Learn More
Tutuni Tiwi Islands Mat Red & Black 3m x 3mProduct Code: 15691Price $197.89 $179.90
Tutuni is a new and unique Tiwi design in striking red and black. This signature style is deeply embedded in Tiwi artist, Tictac Moore.
The home of the Tiwi people consists of two main islands, Bathurst and Melville Islands. They are located in the Timor Sea just north of Darwin and are separated from the Australian mainland by the Apsley Strait. The Tiwi Islands has a rich culture where art plays a very important role.
The name for the design is 'Tutuni' which means spear in Tiwi. Tictac has replicated the spear in a photo of her Grandpa, Allie Miller Mungatopi to design this mat. Everything Tictac knows of her Grandpa has been passed down through stories, and most of the photos she holds of him have come from books. In one of those books, there is a photo of him standing holding a spear, painted up and dressed ready for a ceremony. It is this spear she has used for the design.
In the centre of the mat, you will also see Tictac's representation of the sun, which is her skin group. This symbol is iconic for her and features in most of her art.
Made with recycled plastic, this Tiwi Aboriginal design mat is waterproof, easy to clean and UV treated. It is a perfect way to celebrate diversity. The closely woven weave creates a soft and comfortable surface to sit or lay on outdoors or indoors. The mat is reversible, with one side predominantly black while the other is predominantly red.Learn More
